Today's musings

They say good farm help is hard to find.

They haven't met Daniel.

Daniel, by true definition, isn't really "farm help". He is more an extension of the family. At any rate, he also helps on the farm, arriving every morning by 7AM and putting in many quality hours 5 days a week.

This morning I woke to a clanging and banging (softly, of course) in the kitchen. Guess who was making breakfast? Daniel! This isn't in his job description, but he arrived and decided to cook up some oatmeal and fry up some eggs and sausage.
Why? He woke up hungry. Go Daniel!

I can't even imagine raising BOYS any other place than a farm. I have a 16 year old son hanging from the beams of a building right now kicking the daylights out of the siding....all for a good cause. He is removing the old siding so he and Daniel can put up new. I am guessing there are a couple guys who are going to come to the house after awhile ready for a rest. That siding has been on there for a 100 years or so, no kidding!

Clark
Putting up new roofing
Riding bike

December is here!

The new roof on the old hog house building and also the one on the back of the house got done just in the nick of time, I guess. It's been windy and rainy ever since. My guys are getting quite good at roofing.

The little boys earned some money picking up nails from the roofing projects (Paul figures it is cheaper to pay them to pick up nails than to have to buy new tires!). They decided to buy a board game to play with their money. (Sounds good and quiet to me. YES!!). Garth had me take him to the local variety store and he selected Monopoly as the pieces to their former one have disappeared over time.

On the way to the variety store, I dropped Maria off at the bulk food store to do some shopping for me. She likes that job and I figure that's a good life skill.

Paul took most of the boys to my parent's yesterday. Blake helped my dad put a motor in dad's '64 Biscayne while Brady, Brock, Trent and Miles spent some time "helping" my mom make supper.

Looks like our friend Dante, the Mint Brook Meadows Tea guy, is going to borrow a couple of children today to help him for awhile. Oh how I remember the days when there was too much to do and a houseful of knee-high children who couldn't really help. That's where Dante is right now!

Clark has taken up thumbsucking! I have to say it does look cute.

Turkey Time!

After spending about 2 hours on the computer sorting turkey orders, I hope I've been accurate!! Paul is now out eyeing the turkey pens and taking inventory. Next week is the marathon turkey dressing of the year! I can't say it's fun, but we do end up with some energetic helpers most years that helps mix it up a bit.

Monday

Today we began what I hope will be phase one of our basement "renovation". That is, we are wanting to clean the gravel floor out of the basement and pour cement. It couldn't happen soon enough! The weather is turning colder and 5 little boys are driving Tonka trucks around the hardwood floors on our cramped 1st floor in an effort to occupy themselves. It is positively deafening. I hope they can move their toys into the basement to play after the cement is dry.

Well, the crowning moment of our black walnut harvest happened last night. A semi came and emptied our front yard of over 20 tons of bagged walnuts. Have to give that trucker credit as I know he eyed our narrow road and driveway with trepidation for fear he'd never make the turns, but he did it! Somehow I don't think he believed me when I breezily told him that trucks come in an out of here all the time.

So, you would think our guys would have little to do now that they've ended the walnut harvest and sent the nuts on their way to Missouri. No so. Our breakfast time conference was spent dispatching our troops to varied and sundry locations.

Maria and a number of smaller folks are on pig duty. That is, extracting said pigs from the neighbor's field and securing them in our own. Those who aren't doing that just now are taking the parade of cows down the road to a rented pasture. I call it a parade because the little neighbor children clamor for a front row seat along the road to watch the unseemly procession both morning and evening.

Paul is about to launch a very lengthy journey hauling beef cattle from place to place. But, the very important cattle trailer renovation took on new proportions since its last mention here and it isn't done---yet. Blake has been steel reinforcing it of late and I suppose that job is about to hit a fevered pitch to make it road worthy in the next hour or two.

We've had some discussion during our breakfast conference, too, about diplomacy. You know, when you have to tell the ATV repair shop that the engine rebuild job they did some time ago really didn't turn out too well. Someone will be taking a four wheeler back to the shop today.

Our friend Josh will be leaving us by bus today. We've greatly enjoyed his visit.

What would this update be worth if I didn't mention Clark? He is napping. His big feat of the day? He had a bath.....
