Black Walnuts are upon us

As you can see by the photos below, we are in the midst of the yearly black walnut harvest and this year seems to be about as big a year as any we've had in the last 13 years.

On Saturday alone, we got in nine tons of black walnuts, bringing the season total to about 55.5 tons. The season will last until November 5th.

We had vehicles lined up the full lenghth of the drive pretty well all day Saturday. People are, for the most part, patient as each gets his turn at the huller while the boys---Blake, Josh, Logan and Paul----madly catch bagfuls of nuts and weigh them then haul them off with the loader.

At one point on Saturday, I knew it was getting a little hairy when I was pulling in with our farm truck with nuts the little boys and I had gathered. There was a long line and I was tired and wanted to just go to the house, so I bypassed the line. Wouldn't you know some guy stopped me by wildly flailing his arms as if to say, "What does this woman think she's doing??? Get back in line!!"

I just called out the window that I get cuts because I LIVE HERE!!!!

Paul's parents came home from Northern Indiana on Saturday afternoon thankful to have safely whethered the tornado that ripped through there. Paul's dad was surprised by the pile of walnuts we had going as he had been told a semi had been there on Friday to take a load away! It hadn't looked any different than when he'd left on Thursday.

I have to give the youngsters in this family credit: they've been real troopers through this extremely busy time of year!
