What a Quack! Another Nutty Day on the Farm
I haven't written a blog post in a coon's age. I know it's walnut season, so I started out writing about that.....but I just couldn't get into it. Not that the reality of *living* walnut season is boring, but trying to explain the technical aspects of it was.
Anyhow: walnut season in a nut shell: we (well, some of us....) are black, dirty, and disgusting. We (again....some...) have been lifting, shoveling, scooping, weighing, lifting, and stacking walnuts (and walnuts and walnuts and walnuts....). We load our first semi truck full of them tomorrow. So, yea, I'm talking a lot of walnuts.
The phone? It rings a lot. We say the same thing a lot. We give directions from anywhere in our sleep a lot. We try to make each caller feel like s/he is the first person we've talked to that day (even though s/he may be the 4th call we're taking in a row without hanging up.....). I've resisted the temptation to answer by saying, "Congratulations! You're the 25th caller!" It's all good. The phone calls..... they go with the turf.
Now on to what happened this morning.
It actually started Tuesday while Paul and I were butchering chickens. A guy stopped in. I couldn't really hear the conversation very well from my vantage point over the plucker noise, but Paul ended up promising to have a couple ducks ready for the gentleman with the thick Asian accent to pick up on Thursday (which is today).
This plan was great thinking of it in future terms. The reality was, it slipped Paul's mind until this morning. In fact, the "OH NO!!" that he woke up saying was followed by, "I forgot to catch the ducks!" The ducks were still swimming on the pond.
Ducks swim. Ducks run. Ducks dive. Ducks fly.
Paul says to the boys a little later, "I want you boys to go catch two ducks." I was thinking that sounded about as easy as if he had told them to catch the next two red tail hawks that flew over the farm.
I went about my business. Some time later, I was walking back in from letting the laying chickens out of their bus-house when I met up with Garth on the four wheeler. He was heading back the main raceway toward the pond with a kayak strapped to the back of the four wheeler. Following him came Brady and Brock on another four wheeler with another kayak.
I was thinking, "I wonder how many people just happen to have a couple of kayaks sitting around?" They really ought to. You just never know when you may need them.
Not to mention, how many children get away with driving a four wheeler (with a kayak.....) past their mother on a school day???
I did not witness the event, but one might imagine that 3 boys, 2 kayaks and a couple of ducks on a pond could be interesting. Only one boy came in wet, however.
And so, another day is winding down on the farm......

It's that time of year again...
From the darkest to the lightest (which happens to be age order as well)...Shannah, Garth, Brady, Brock, Trent, Miles, Clay (yup, he's been helping too! =) )

Looking at these photos it looks as if we may not actually have to work, which is not the case! I just haven't gotten the chance to take any photos while running the hauler!
The little helpers...
