Putting bunchkins to bed tonight, I was summons by a call from Blake to google something on the computer as he has no computer at his shop. "cummins head bolt torque". Whatever that is.
I read to him the words of the first hit I got to:
Torque the head to Cummins spec
Step1- all bolts to 66 ft.lbs.
Step2- recheck all bolts.
Step3- all bolts to 89 ft.lbs.
Step4- recheck all bolts.
Step5- rotate all bolts an additional 90degrees-(bolts) if using Studs torque to-125 ft.lbs.
Check valve clearance when done.
I have NO IDEA what any of that means. At all. His answer? "Yep, that's exactly what was in my head, I just wanted to make sure. Thanks, Mom."
Glad he knows what he's doing.....
The girls are at a bridal shower. Paul is hauling a calf that everyone calls "The Serial Sucker" (as it is a huge calf who nurses any cow dry!) to another farm.
It's raining----again! We've cancelled the farm picnic we had scheduled for tomorrow.

A few pictures from today
Today Paul's sister came over and helped can tomatoes....(A mom P.S. The moms are both eerily missing from the pictures. These are of Maria and Kaitlyn. Rest assured, the moms really weren't eating bon bons out on the porch whilst the girls toiled a perfectly good day away stuffing 'maters in jars.)
(Another mom P.S., that really is a pile of laundry waiting to be folded in the background. Do you want clothes or do you wanna eat?????!)
...and also do corn
Is she doing this lightning fast or what????
And here is a piece baby corn that found it's way here with the rest! (And yet another mom P.S. because she's tired and feeling wacky.....The BOYS husked all this corn. It is no wonder *other* stuff got sent in here. They all had *other* things they would've rather been doing!)
Yesterday it was 50 pints of salsa, which I hope we like 'cuz there's an awful lot of it.
We also spent a good bit of time today outside cleaning up for the two big picnics we're hosting this coming weekend.

Don't try this at home
Paul had taken most of the boys up to the big city to help a friend empty out an old building. Our friend is gearing up to move, having sold his residential property to someone who is about to change it into a commercial property.
Paul and the boys had been there on a number of occasions lately because it was rather a big job, what with stuff having been stored in this building for 20-30-40-even 60 years. Things were dusty and messy and they were pitching the junky stuff out the 2nd story window.
There were all manner of things up in that building as once it was a useful chicken house in what would've been the country way back when. The city had literally grown up around the place as evidenced by the fast food restaurant just a stone's thrown over the fence from where they were working and a modern preschool on the other side.
Well, the details from here are a little sketchy. Somewhere along the line one boy emptied out the liquid contents of an old bottle out the window so as to be able to throw the empty bottle aside with some others.
Someone else wondered aloud if it might be flammable.
This is where things went south in a hurry. For some reason known only to young boys, another of my boys pulled out a pocket lighter to give it the experimental test: will it burn?
Yes, it did. In a huge way. My own son, quite without intending to, lit fire to the building he and everyone else was standing in!
Not long after the whole nightmare was underway, Paul called 911.
The fire chief gave the boys a talking to and confiscated the lighter. Ironically, Paul had been searching high and low for just such a lighter the other day to burn trash here at home. Who knew that was but a foreshadowing of what was to come?
No one was hurt, thank God.
We'll be spending next week trying to meet the one week deadline given by the fire chief to get the whole thing cleaned up.

Sidewalk BEFORE pictures
Here begins the laying of the new sidewalks in front of the houses. Logan, Elson, and Shawn begin removing some sod.
Gramma especially asked for curves in the sidewalk, so our obliging helpers are here conferring about how to go about this one.
Clark is trying it out.
Back at the old ranch, some of the rest of us were busy with other things.
There was no shortage of work for everyone! Maria and Shannah were inside cutting the husked corn off for the freezer.
Here Sam and Clark are trying out some vintage weed eaters. You turn the handle; there are blades that move back and forth, cutting the grass. Interesting, but I think I prefer the modern version.
The AFTER pictures will be up when there is an after!
