The conclusion of the last two posts....
Josh, bless his heart, ended up sticking with that brutal job of hauling load after load of hay home from the fields as Paul kept baling and baling. I offered to relieve him, but either he was too polite to let me or he actually wanted to keep at it.
I went out into the shop to see if I could be of assistance to my girls who were packing and packing and packing chicken. They didn't really need me so much, so I grabbed Brady and Trevor and we headed out to move the beef cow fence.
Paul and I usually move the beef cow fence together every evening. Often Trevor and/or Clay come with us. I was the most likely candidate to take charge of moving the fence since I had some experience.
By the time we left, some of our evening company had arrived. So, picture this: we have people pulling in to spend what should be a pleasant evening with us. The dad is three miles away baling hay, all three girls are packing chickens, and the mom is about to head out to the back forty to move a herd of cows. The barn is full of cows being milked by Geof, the guy who works here. Several freshly bathed and dressed children are in the yard.
Well, Logan was home and ready, but he was getting off the foot that he ran a nail through earlier in the day on the job. (Which of course has me doing a quicky "mom exam" and first aid and scanning my recollect for his tetanus status.)
Some of the young girls don aprons and help finish packing chickens, a young friend jumps on the Kubota with Brady and me to go move cows. The rest jump to setting up the volleyball net and situate the food.
It was all slightly reminiscent of those bad dreams that I have sometimes where I have an appointment somewhere and I just can't seem to get there no matter how hard I try. This time it was having a houseful of company show up before any of us were done working for the day. Some days are simply beset with unforeseen troubles like flat tires, dead batteries, broken discs on the hay mower and freezers that need to be cleaned, not necessarily in order. Oh, and had I mentioned that I had been in bed sick earlier in the week?
Anyhow, it's over now. Paul and Garth finally came to the house just as the first people were going home. Josh never did make it to the party. I feel bad about that, but you know, these guys (and gals!) work hard and sometimes miss the party. For what? Ultimately so people can eat.
Oh, after everyone left, the phone rang at about 11:45PM. It was the hay wrapper guys explaining that a bearing went out on their wrapper and they were headed home to see about fixing it....
